Wednesday, June 29th: Amsterdam, Netherlands to Minneapolis, Minnesota
Rose: Both Susan and I loved the canal tour in Amsterdam. It was the perfect way to get a glimpse of the city.
Thorn: I had to say goodbye to Anne, Europe, and poffertjes. Boohoo! :(
Our last day in Europe was a day well spent! Although we were both tired and ready to go home, it was a fantastic experience. Anne showed us all over Amsterdam, and we were able to enjoy a wonderful breakfast together at "Pancakes." Anyone want to guess what we ate? :)
After breakfast, we did a canal tour of Amsterdam. In my opinion, this is the best way to truly experience Amsterdam and I highly recommend it. Not only was it unique, but it was the best way to see a lot of the city in a short amount of time. I loved floating along the canals. My favorite part was the beautiful houseboats, and of course, all of the bikes.
TIP: While you are in Amsterdam, look both ways before you cross the street. . .not just for vehicles, but for bikes! Always be aware of your surroundings when you are walking on the sidewalk - bikers will zoom past you!
Following the canal tour, we stopped for a quick coffee and stroopwafel break before heading to the Schiphol Airport for our flight home. I love flying, and spent the majority of the flight with my mouth wide open staring out the window. We flew over barges in the North Sea and mountains in Iceland. How amazing! This was the perfect reminder of how great our creation is and how traveling is such a blessing. I firmly believe everyone should travel somewhere in their lifetime, whether it be to the bordering state or to a completely different culture.
This unforgettable trip changed my life. I learned there is a world outside of the United States; one that we need to be more aware of. So many people are never realize what they are missing out on: new foods, new languages, new cultures, and new ways of life. From attending a monastic prayer service to trying foie gras, this trip has changed me more than I will ever know and I am forever grateful for the opportunity to travel.
